Feng shui is a wonderful way to create improvements in your life simply by aligning the items in your bedroom.  These can include your bed, your desk or computer, even your stereo. 

Properly aligned, you can expect to see improvements in your relationships, your studies, and your health.  You might even find a new love as a result!  Use these tips to get your room in harmony with your life.

Important Basic Feng Shui Bedroom Do’s and Don’ts

DO use a compass
Stand in the middle of the room and hold the compass level and waist-high.  Then make a diagram of your room, creating nine squares.  Put the correct direction on each square.  Now you are ready to move the items according to compass or your personal auspicious directions.  (A compass only costs about $2-$5 at Wal-Mart or Target.)
 
Give yourself a mini-space clearing
–If you decide to use feng shui in your room, then clear out all unnecessary items and junk from your drawers, closet, and under the bed.
–Clean thoroughly by vacuuming, dusting and washing windows, ceiling fans, etc.
–Now you’re ready to feng shui your room, but follow the DON’Ts below:

DON’T
Have open book shelves opposite your bed or behind you as you study.  These act like knives and will encourage people “talking behind your back.”
Have water or pictures of water (this aggravates asthma, allergies, and can encourage respiratory or sinus problems). So take out the Zen fountain or fish tank.
Have plants in the bedroom.  Plants use up body energy in your bedroom. 

BED DOs and DON’Ts
DO make sure it has the widest view of the room and entryway so you can see the door easily
DO try to sleep with the top of your head pointing in one of your personal feng shui directions (see below)
DO have a solid wall behind it (or at least curtains) vs. a window
DO make sure you cannot see a bathroom, toilet, or stairs from the bed
DON’T have the bed against a shared wall of a bathroom or toilet
DON’T have a mirror or television that reflects the bed
DON’T have your feet point out the door from your bed

Using personal feng shui:  Having your head pointed in one of your auspicious directions (AD) is one of the best ways to tap good luck.  Click here to calculate your personal feng shui directions.  This link will tell you what directions are the best for you.  Even if your room is in the Southwest portion of the house and this is not a good direction for you, you can still orient your bed so that your head points in one of your good directions.

DESK DOs and DON’Ts
DO try to place your desk in NE corner of your room
DO always sit where you can see the door and anyone entering the room easily
DO try to face one of your AD
DO keep a bright light turned on here to enhance your education luck
DO hang a lead crystal from the ceiling here, or place rock crystals in this corner of the room and in the NE corner of the desk for better study concentration
DO add a globe to this location to improve test scores and success in school

DRESSER
Place in East corner if wood
Place in West corner if metallic-colored, or if painted white, silver, or gold
Place in North if black or blue
Place in SE if green
Place in South or SW if red, orange, purple

COMPUTER, PHONE, & STEREO
Place phone in the NW corner of room to bring more helpful people into your life.
Keep stereo playing on low volume while you are away to keep energy active in your room and attract helpful people to you.
 
DECORATIONS, ETC.
Mirrors: Not recommended in the bedroom.  If used, make sure you cannot see yourself from the bed.

Lamps: Place one in the south (fame and recognition; a lava lamp is great here!), the NE (educational luck), and the SW (to help you with your sweetie  or bring one if you don’t have one already — lava lamps are also great here,too!).  The lamps will energize these areas.

Pictures:  Make sure are these positive images that make you happy.  Violence, dark, or brooding-types of pictures are not suitable for a place of rest and relaxation. 

Troubles with mom and dad?  Place a happy picture of your family in the East corner of your room to help these relationships become easier and more harmonious.

Looking for a new love?  Place a picture of your heart’s desire in the SW to help this relationship — or to encourage a new one relationship, place a picture of your “ideal” person here. 

Bulletin boards: Hang these on the south wall of your room.  Pin pictures of famous people, letters of recognition, awards, ribbons, or certificates here for more added recognition any kind of accomplishment is perfect for this location. 

A light that illuminates this area is especially helpful!  Place trophies on a shelf in this location for continued success and recognition.  Paint this board red for an extra boost in recognition energy! 

Ceiling fans: not recommended because they displace body energy while sleeping; if used, place small red dot on each blade.

Clutter: If you don’t feel well or you’re having troubles in your life, clear your space.  Get a box and do a thorough cleaning out. This doesn’t mean you have to throw things away. 

Store them in the garage or attic.  If after a while you don’t use any of these things, then donate them to charity.  Do make note of how you feel once your room is clear.

To maximize the energy in baby’s room, there are several important factors to consider, such as room location, safety, colors, and furniture arrangement. These make up the foundation of good feng shui in the nursery. Plus, using feng shui will help to make babies less fussy, make them feel more comfortable in their surroundings, and will promote their health and well-being.

By following some of the most basic considerations, feng shui can help parents create a room that makes them and their baby happy. Here are 7 tips for creating good feng shui in your baby’s room:

1. Select a good location for the baby’s bedroom.
A new baby should have a bedroom that is not over a garage or has an empty space below. The bedroom also shouldn’t be located where there is excessive noise that might keep the baby from sleeping, such as close to a living room where the TV is on or close to a noisy street or neighbor.

2. Bed placement is important.
Put the baby’s bed on a solid wall across from the door with the head of the crib against the wall, rather than lengthwise, just as you would a regular bed. Too often parents put the long side of the crib against the wall instead of the head. Avoid doing this because the baby will be in a defensive position. After all, you wouldn’t want to sleep with your bed against a wall, so don’t place your baby that way.

The bed should not be against a window or be directly in line with the door. Make sure the baby does not sleep or has a bed placed against a slanted wall or ceiling. These press on the baby. Avoid placing the baby against a wall that is shared with a bathroom, toilet, storage, or utility-type room.

3. Opt for soothing colors.
Children benefit from bright colors in play areas, but if these are used in a baby’s room, infants can be over stimulated to the point that they do not rest well. Because deep sleep in babies is necessary for healthy growth, be sure to select restful, muted colors.

Whites are excellent for children, but avoid black and white color scheme because there is too much contrast. Select color palettes that are close to one another and harmonious in feng shui terms, such as green and blue, white and beige, or pink and yellow.

4. Create soft movement in the room.
A room that is too still becomes stagnant and this is not beneficial for the growth of the child. To create good, but soft energy and movement, hang mobiles close to a window to move gently in the breeze and keep soft music playing in the room. You can also place a small fan on a dresser turned on low to keep air moving in the room. Avoid placing the baby under a ceiling fan as these disrupt their body energy.

5. Watch for pointed objects.
Make sure there are no hard corners from dressers or changing tables pointed at the baby’s head or body. Move these to another part of the room where they are not pointed in the direction of the bed.

6. Select design motifs with care.
Nature designs are excellent and promote growth. Animal designs should also be chosen carefully. Ferocious or aggressive animals, even when they are made for a baby’s room, should not be chosen. Some of these are found in jungle motif designs and include lions, tigers, bears, and reptiles.

You should also make sure that designs do not have harsh points, such as arrows, crosses, diamonds, or triangles. Motifs with fish are fine as long as the watery theme is not overly dominant. Otherwise, respiratory, lung, nasal, or kidney problems could develop.

7. Keep lighting balanced.
During the day, the light in the baby’s room should neither be too bright or too dark. Install blinds that can be lowered or raised as needed to keep the room at a pleasant level of lighting (being sure to keep cords out of baby’s reach). If the room is too bright, the baby won’t rest deeply. If too dim, the room would be too “yin” and the baby could fail to thrive or have respiratory problems.

Every school year parents and students dutifully trudge through the malls in search of the perfect sneaker or the cool new outfit for the coming school year.  However, it’s unlikely that the new shoe or shirt will benefit them as much as a new design in the bedroom.  That’s because a bedroom makeover will create new interest and energy – what feng shui calls “chi” – in the bedroom that will benefit a child.

According to feng shui, the Chinese technique for design and arrangement, rooms that have good energy, or “chi”, create happier, well-adjusted children.  Feng shui theories suggest that for a child’s room to have good “chi,” the room must follow certain guidelines such as that they must be restful, promote good relationships others and generate good self-esteem.  Perhaps most importantly, harmonious children’s bedrooms encourage good study habits and promote greater success in school.  

What does it take to promote greater success in school?  According to feng shui, the following seven tips are key to creating rooms that inspire kids to study.

1. The room must have a desk. 

It sounds obvious, but many kids’ only workspace is either a bed, the bedroom floor, or the family dining table.  Every child needs a suitable study area in the bedroom that includes a desk, chair, and a lamp.  Children with study areas are more likely to study.  Better still, having a study area keeps all the school books and papers confined to the child’s room.  Feng shui also believes it’s best for children to study facing the northeast, the direction of wisdom and learning.

2.  Ground your kids.

Buy your kids a globe to promote interest in geography and to help “ground” them and encourage them to study.  Add a globe in the Northeast corner of the bedroom, if possible.

3.  Create an achievement corner.

Every child needs to have recognition for a job well done.  A perfect way to gain this is to create an achievement corner on the South wall of the bedroom.  According to feng shui, this is the recognition area and is a good place to pin up awards, papers with good grades, letters of recommendation, ribbons or trophies.

4.  Hang a crystal in the Northeast corner of the room.

Crystals are used to make computer chips faster.  Hang a crystal in the study location to create more “study” chi and to help sharpen the child’s ability to “process” or think!

5.  Put your child in the command position.

Avoid having children face a wall when studying because this represents an obstacle.  They should be able to see the door when someone enters. 

6.  Display maps and other educational artwork. 

Maps are another way to ground educational pursuits.  They encourage “worldly” interest and curiosity and they make suitable images for a child’s room. Avoid scary creatures, pictures depicting violence, or sad or dark subjects.

7.  Eliminate TV from the bedroom.

Sadly many of today’s children have TVs in their bedrooms.  This is a feng shui no-no because it can make children much less likely to study and rest fully.  If your child doesn’t study as much as you would like and has a TV in the bedroom, ask yourself what is more important:  television or school?

8.  Shells and fish are symbols of education.

Conch shells and koi or goldfish are excellent symbols of educational success.  Place the conch shell in the Northeast corner of the bedroom.  Or, hang a picture of koi or goldfish in the Northeast corner.  It is not recommended to keep live fish in the bedroom as water in the bedroom is associated with loss.

9.  Make a space for books and school materials.

When kids come home from school they should have a place to put their backpacks and books.  There should also be a place for them to hang coats and hats and take off shoes.  If your kids put their books on the stairs this is especially important because anyone using the stairs will be stepping over the books.  This symbollically puts education “under your feet.”  Make sure books are not put on the stairs but have a regular “home” when the kids come in the door.

10.  Activate the wisdom direction.

The Northeast sector should be activated appropriately with a globe, a lamp, and/or a quartz crystal or geode.  Other objects would include anything made of porcelain or earth, such as a vase.  A rock collection is another excellent way to energize this sector.

11.  Careful about what you place under the stairs.

If you have stairs in your home, you will want to make sure there is nothing there that can be harmful to your family.  In particular, water located under stairs poses a threat to children in the home — and to their education.  If the space under your stairs is open, try to close it up.  If you can’t, then place a heavy object such as a statue here.  If there is a closet located here, make sure it is filled with family possessions, such as holiday decorations, suitcases, or other household items.  Avoid placing books in here, however, as this can cause studies to falter.

Earlier this summer, a writer contacted me about feng shui success stories for an article she was writing on feng shui for children’s rooms. She wanted to speak to clients of mine who used my feng shui help to help improve life for their children and their families.

One of the clients I contacted answered the writer’s interview questions so beautifully that I wanted to share them with you, dear reader. This client lives in Miami, Florida. We corresponded by mail, email, and by phone. Of course, the most credit for the success goes to my client…

That’s because this client didn’t just want things to change — she was willing to help them change by making the effort. This is the lesson of feng shui: if you want to put in the energy into your environment, the energy will come back to you ten-fold.

There is nothing like a real-life story such as this to motivate me to make changes in my own home. I hope that this one person’s story will motivate you to create an environment that supports you and your family so that you are all healthy, happy, and contented.

1. What was the situation before seeking out Kathryn Weber’s assistance?
Before meeting Kathryn, my two children were totally alienated from the rest of the kids in school. They were arguing a lot and were very rebellious. My daughter was very unhappy because she did not have any friends. The other kids in school made fun of her.

2. What made you decide to consider feng shui?
I stumbled across feng shui in my desperate search to help my children become happier. I was looking through the Internet and read a lot about it in different sites. When I came upon Kathryn’s Red Lotus Letter site it was as if I had found the answer to my prayers. Kathryn is very detailed in her explanations and recommendations.

It was almost as if I had found a book written specifically to address my situation. I immediately contacted her via email and explained the situation to her. Not only did she respond quickly but she also offered so much advice and help that I could apply right away that I was completely sold on feng shui from thereon.

3. What was your daughter’s response? How involved was she in decision making?
My daughter was very receptive to the idea of applying the feng shui concepts to help her situation because she did not wanted to suffer anymore and was extremely excited about the outcome. She was definitely very involved. She went with me to the store to select the new color of her room and buy a few things that we needed. She also helped me place the objects in the right places and has become very interested in finding out more about feng shui.

4. What were you hoping to accomplish by using feng shui?
I was hoping to change the terrible situation that my kids were in and make them happier. I also wanted to improve everything for my family — our relationships, our finances. But I was most worried about my children.

5. What was the outcome? Did this help your situation?
The outcome was fantastic. Within 3 weeks of implementing some of the changes (we are still working on a few more) she started becoming more popular. She made two new friends. The kids in school stopped making fun of her. The fights between her and her brother stopped.

6. How does your daughter feel about the change?
She is happier and more confident than I have seen her in a very long time. She wants to learn more about feng shui and how to achieve balance in our environment.

7. Would you recommend this to others?
I would definitely recommend this to anyone, young and old. It is a new way of life. A new way of looking at your surroundings and achieving peace and balance.

8. What is the biggest difference that you’ve noticed in your lives as a result of applying feng shui techniques in your home?
We are at peace. The house has become warm and welcoming to us. Our family is spending more time enjoying each other and less time worried about things we do not have.

9. What is the most important things parents should consider when looking at feng shui?
I think the most important thing is not to look at it as a burden because it involves change. It should be approached as an opportunity to better your life. It is not a chore to be done just to get it out of the way. The changes are usually minimal and require very little money to implement but the rewards are enormous.

10. What is the best way to start/ approach your child about this? Can you recommend good sources of information, books, etc?
Never impose it on your child. I started talking with my daughter about her feelings and how different places make her feel happy or sad. I explained to her that our environment has a big influence on how we feel and act and that we have the power to change our environment and make it a better place for us.

I explained to her that feng shui is about balance where the good is enhanced and the bad in channeled or controlled so it cannot hurt us. I helped her picture feng shui like a breeze coming through our house. We want this breeze to reach all corners and feel good when we are inside. She understands the importance of not blocking this “breeze” and help it run through.

I would certainly recommend the website The Red Lotus Letter by Kathryn Weber. Her weekly newsletter contains tons of information with easy to use advice that can certainly help anyone. She is very accessible by email and is a very warm and caring individual.

11. Has this inspired you to apply feng shui in other parts of your home?
Yes. I requested a whole house consultation with Kathryn Weber via email. It was extremely easy and very affordable. I sent her the information via email and she gave me detailed explanations and drawings about what to do and where in the house. She explained the reason for all changes and even gave me suggestions on where to buy or how to make some of the things I needed to place around the house.

I strongly believe that, if you want to better the quality of your life, instead of spending time and money on other things that only bring a brief enjoyment you should reward yourself with the lifetime change that feng shui could bring to you and your family.

What does that mean exactly? Well, when it comes to a child’s bedroom, feng shui dictates everything from correct bed alignment, proper bedroom choice, essential decorating and design elements, i.e., do’s and don’ts (no vicious animals, etc.) for a child’s room, even how to influence the child to be studious and well-behaved — all things most parents would appreciate knowing. The purpose of feng shui in a child’s bedroom is the same as every parent’s objective in decorating their childrens rooms: to create a healthy, happy environment that fosters education, good health, happy relationships with parents and siblings, and respect for parents and others.

Feng shui believes that children and parents can enjoy success in life and healthy relationships if the environment supports them. Naturally, children must feel safe, secure, and cared for to thrive. By putting interest and effort into a child’s room, it shows the child that the child’s space, and therefore, the child, is important. Making children healthy, happy, secure, and successful, goes a long way toward making a better world for everyone.
The Seven Fundamental Feng Shui Tips for Children

1. Place a happy picture of the parents in the children’s rooms.
This subtly exerts the authority and prominence of the parents as heads of the household. It is also one of the quickest and most effective ways to bring a problem child or other behavioral difficulties into line.

2. Align the child’s bed to the widest part of the room.
Make sure your child can see the door from his or her bed easily, but is not in direct line of the door. Your child should also not share a wall with a toilet or see a toilet or bathroom from the bed as this can cause health problems.

Bunk beds are not advised. Children must have room to grow and the bed overhead exerts pressure on the child below. Because there is empty space below them, children on the top bunk may feel less secure.

If possible, try to have a separate bedroom for each child. If this isn’t possible, there are lots of decorative ways to create division and privacy within a room. Just check out the tents in the bedroom of these two boys. This is just one example of how to give each child the space they need… you can use your creativity to think of others.

3. Create a space for study and accomplishments.
Having a dedicated space, including a desk and lamp where your child can study, demonstrates to your child the importance you place on education and your child’s educational achievement.

If this has been a source of problems, make the study position in the NE corner of the bedroom. Also make a place on a south wall, if possible, of your child’s accomplishments. Doing so reinforces that you are proud of your child’s efforts
Display drawings, crafts, awards, trophies, ribbons, or other special items, such as tests with good scores or letters from teachers. Place items here that have brought special recognition.

4. Make the child’s room a healthy place.
Water pictures, aquariums, or sounds of water that can be heard from the bedroom can create an unhealthy environment and may even lead to respiratory ailments. This is especially important if the child has any health problems, particularly asthma.

5. Clear the space so your child can rest and be creative.
Jammed closets and drawers, beds with boxes, shoes and other items underneath must be cleaned out. Creating space and visual openness helps your child to feel less pressured, and more likely to be imaginative and creative. More is definitely not “more” when it comes to kids. Give them a visual rest and clear out all the stuff they haven’t played with in a month or more.

6. Use light, color, and artwork in the room to make a happy environment.
A child’s room should stimulate, not dampen, the child’s spirit. Make sure there is adequate lighting for the desk, for a bedside table, and that windows can be closed off for privacy. Rooms that are painted blue (unless it’s a bright or light-colored shade) or other dark colors can be depressing and create too much oppressive energy.

Bright colors, such as yellows, light greens, purples and pinks are good choices, with yellow being the optimal choice. Also very important, be sure to eliminate images of ferocious or dangerous animals or violence.
These are poor symbols for making a child feel safe in the bedroom. Select items for the room that inspire and intrigue a child to learn and that foster his or her sense of security.

7. Position children in the correct bedroom locations.
If possible, boys should be placed in the east or north bedrooms and girls should be placed in the south or southeast or west bedrooms. Lastly, use personal feng shui. Have the child sleep with her head pointed toward her personal best directions.
