The color red is also the color of blood, our life force, so it’s no wonder that we’re attracted to it. Red energizes us and makes us hungry. That’s why so many fast food restaurants use the color red in their designs and logos. Red is also a popular color for dining rooms; it keeps us enjoying the food and makes our dining experience livelier.

Red has both negative and positive connotations, but regardless of the connotation, red symbolizes one important element: energy. Whatever red touches, it imbues with extra oomph. That’s why, even in the most tranquil rooms, a touch of red is all it takes to keep a room from sliding off into a coma.

When it comes to feng shui, red is an extremely important color. Red is the color of the south or fire and fame. Red turns up the energy level on everything it touches and it animates the inanimate.

Red is also perfectly portrayed in the very popular film, Seabiscuit. The film is based on the true story of Seabiscuit, the legendary racehorse that was “too small” to win. But win he did. What makes this story even more interesting – at least in feng shui terms – is how all the elements were in alignment.

The horse, associated also with the south in the Chinese view, was ridden by a rider in red silks. Not only that, but the rider wore a triangle on his silks, and the triangle is the symbol of fire. So, by feng shui standards, this horse was destined to win because each element was compounded by the next: the animal (horse), with the color (red), with the shape (triangle).

Even the jockey, Red Pollard, was named “Red” and had red hair. Lastly, in the movie, Red Pollard wore the number 9 on his silks. The number 9 is the number also associated with the south.

This kind of compounding of all these red elements adds extra emphasis and power. So, with all this additional power, Seabiscuit, the little horse no one expected much of, couldn’t help but win. Think about this when using red in your home or office.

Consider ways to compound all the elements – not just red. But remember, too much red can burn itself out. Instead of covering everything in red paint, consider adding other red elements, such as number and shape, too. Add these touches to the south corner of your home, living room, or office and watch your popularity soar!

Red Effects: 9 Tips for Using Red in Your Feng Shui

1. Activate symbols and good luck tokens. Tie red ribbon around feng shui items or good luck items to “activate” them.

2. Stop the drain with red. Put a red toilet lit cover on your toilet to stop the toilet from draining vital energy from your house (unless your toilet is in the center, southwest, or south sectors!).

3. Add a touch of red. Every room needs a touch of clear, pure red. Look at all your rooms and try to find a red item. If one is missing, add a red item, preferably in the S, SW, or NE corners. In the family room, they make everyone happier, times more fun, and people more sociable. Throw lots of red cushions around the room to get everyone happy and bubbling!

4. Warm up your business. Place your phones and fax machines on red paper to stimulate more business.

5. Warm up your love life. Place red and pink flowers in the SW corner of your living room to bring more heat to your romance. Avoid placing them in the bedrooms.

6. Get more attention for your home. If your home is for sale, get more attention to it by placing red flowers in a vase in the living room or dining room. These are excellent for attracting buyers. You will also want to keep a light on at the rear of the house, too. Lastly, make sure there is some open space in the south sector of your home if you are trying to sell it. Open space means air and it takes air to feed fire!

7. Get more recognition at work. Keep a lamp burning in the south portion of your office to stimulate recognition for all your hard work. Add a plant here for an extra boost because plants are wood energy and wood feeds fire.

8. Use pyramid power. The pyramids are one of mankind’s most enduring — and well-known — symbols. That’s because the pyramid is the shape of fire! Have you got a pyramid or other triangle-shaped objects and don’t know what to do with them? Put them in the south sector of your house, your living room, or your office or desk to bring extra recognition (maybe even fame!) your way.

9. Get the power of nine. Place nine objects on your desk or bookshelf at work for an extra boost of recognition. Or, place nine red (what else?) candles on a shelf in the south sector of your living room for more fire energy! Even placing 9 work-related books on a shelf in the South sector can boost your fire and fame energy. Try it today!

If you’re interested progressing in life, it’s important to make feng shui adjustments to important areas such as the north (career/opportunities) and northwest (helpful people/mentors) sectors. These two sectors are critical for helping you rise in prominence.

Enhancing the north sector (of your living room, your house, and in your office or business) helps opportunities to come your way. This is done by adding water elements to this sector. As always, when I talk about a sector, I am talking about one of the 9 “palaces” of the lo shu square (the feng shui roadmap that I offer free to all my subscribers). And, as always, in addition to the nine areas of your home, you’ll also want to divide your living room or office into 9 palaces and enhance each one accordingly.

But it’s not all about the north. No, the saying goes that it’s not what you know, but who you know, which explains why you need mentors and helpful people who can advise you and give you the proper introductions to help you move ahead in life and in business.

It’s interesting how different the Western and Eastern views about mentors are. In Eastern beliefs, you always want to have someone in a prominent position to help you in your endeavors, and these influential people often seek out and want protégés to whom they can pass along their knowledge and to assist them.

In Western, and more so, American, opinions, this assistance is seen as a weakness. Americans often want to “blaze their own trails” and build their careers and business all on their own so they can savor the pride of doing it on their own.

However, in today’s corporate environment, and in an increasingly more competitive world, everyone needs a benefactor or helpful guide. But, to gain this type of relationship, you have to be able to be seen by someone in the position to help you. This is where the south sector comes in.

The south is the direction that is associated with recognition and fame. To have a well-designed and helpful south sector, certain elements must be in harmony. If not, you will struggle to gain recognition – and fame will certainly be elusive.

 With a poor south sector, you will be left feeling like you are chest-deep in the ocean and waving your arms wildly trying to get someone to notice you. Not a good situation if you are trying to get a book published, or to come to the attention of superiors, get a new job, if you are an actor, or even a single person trying to catch the eye of an admirer.

That’s why the south sector is so important. Where is the south sector? The south, of course. Using a compass, you will want to locate the south corner of your home and office and enhance this area appropriately (refer to the lo shu link in the newsletter-sign up in top right of this page). Use the tips below to help you boost your south sector and get the attention and recognition you crave — and deserve!

1. Lights, camera, action. Light up the south wall of your living room by painting this wall red, adding lights or candles to this area. Place uplights into the bottoms of planters to shine light up into plants. Be sure to make this area bright and well-lit.

2. Call attention to yourself. If you have a university degree, letters of commendation, published articles, trophies, or any kind of recognition whatsoever, place these on the south wall of your living room, office, or waiting area in a business.

3. Use the power of 9. The number nine is the number associated with the south, so if you have pictures taken with famous people or other prestigious items to decorate with, put them into groups of nine on the south wall. Better still, put them all into red frames for extra recognition energy!

4. Complement the south. The south is the direction of fire, so use complementary elements here. Don’t want to paint your south wall red? Then try green or brown shades instead. These are associated with wood and the wood element feeds the fire element.

5. Plant some recognition. In the south portion of your yard or garden, plant shrubs that have red flowers and place lights out in this area of the garden. Or, plant a beautiful tree that turns red in the fall. Plants indoors are also great additions to the south part of the house (provided it is not a bedroom).

6. Bring on the sun. If you have a picture of a sunrise, or figure of the sun, or anything with the sun or sunlight in it, put it in the south sector of your living room or home. This will “shine” on you and build your reputation. Even sunflowers are auspicious here!

7. The bird is the word. Use birds in the south to bring good news and recognition to you. If you can find an image of the Chinese phoenix, place this there. If not, birds such as roosters, parrots, or peacocks are all acceptable substitutes. Even peacock feathers are good here. Try using 9 peacock feathers in a wooden vase to stimulate the south energy.

8. Get to the point. The south is enhanced by anything that is pointed. Therefore, triangles, arrows, or anything that is pointed represents the tip of a flame, and therefore, fire energy. If you have pyramids or triangles, place these (in groups of 9 would be best!) in the south.

9. Chime in. Ever wonder about the best place to hang bamboo windchimes? This is the place! Being made of wood, these are complementary to the south and lift the chi of the south. Make sure they have more than 5-rods, though, as a 5-rod chime would press down the chi (energy) of the south. Six, seven, eight, or nine rod chimes lift the chi and stimulate the south energy.

Enhancing careers with feng shui is a popular subject in feng shui. Second to generating wealth, energizing the career sector ranks high in interest among those interested in using feng shui to better their lives.It makes sense due to the amount of time we spend at our jobs. It also is understandable because to have a successful career enables us to make better decisions for ourselves and our families.

By this, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you simply make more money, because money doesn’t solve all the ills of career problems. Of course, it doesn’t hurt. However, there are plenty of people out there making good salaries but unhappy with their respective careers.

When you energize areas that you would like to improve, it’s possible to open up a range of possibilities. For instance, by energizing your career sector, your job may suddenly become better, or something new and better will be coming to you that you hadn’t expected at all, such as a business opportunity.

But this is the price of making changes — you get more changes in your life, and therefore, more choices! And, that’s what you usually want in your life: more opportunities and choices to create greater happiness for yourself and your family.

There are two critical areas to enhance if you want to improve your career: your house and your office. Below are ideas for both. However, these are not ALL the possible suggestions; only some of the most basic ones.

STEP ONE: Your Home

6 Key Steps

 1. Look north. Make sure the north sector of your home is in good order. If your north sector is missing or if there is a toilet here, activate the north sector of your living room and office.

 2. If your bedroom is in the north: This can be enhanced by decorating with blue or black, a picture of water (not overly large, however), and metal (preferably gold-colored) objects.

3. A north-facing home: Make the entrance to your home as attractive as possible to invite new opportunities. Make it neat and easy to come into by removing obstacles, blockages, dying plants, worn out welcome mats, etc.

By the way, DON’T buy welcome mats with your name on it you’ll be walking on your good name! Place an image of a turtle or fish here. Be sure to block any views that go straight through from the front of the house to the back or you’ll be missing opportunities (and losing money!).

4. Look south. Display peacock feathers in the south portion of the home and keep this area well-lit. The south represents recognition. A grouping of nine candles would be excellent here as well. Consider painting the south room in your house red, orange, or a shade of red.

5. Welcome career opportunities. Keep a light in the entrance to your home turned on. A chandelier with crystal prisms that cast the different colors about the entryway is especially good.

Or, hang a crystal below your light to cast colored prisms about the foyer. These are especially helpful if your stairs face or end close to the front door; good opportunities go right on out the door!

6. Add water to the front of your home. Consider putting in a water fountain (on the left side of the door as you look out of the house) inside the house or outside. (A water feature on the right side of the house invites cheating in the marriage.) If you put in a water feature outside your home, make sure the water appears to be flowing toward the house. This is one of the best ways to bring opportunities to your door.

Step Two: Your Office

8 Key Elements

1. Sit in a power position by facing (but not in direct line with) the door. Don’t sit with your back to the door ever. If your furnishings in your office or cubicle are built in, then turn your computer so that you can see someone coming from either your left or right side.

2. Tap your pa kua number. Face your personal best directions if at all possible, but never ignoring #1 above. Use as many of your personal best directions as possible!

3. Stop gossip. If gossip is a problem in your career, get a statue of a rooster and place it on your desk to look at anyone coming into the office. This will help curb some of the talk in the office.

4. Get support. This is extremely important for a good career and why you should have something solid behind you. If you have a window at your back, you will suffer from lack of support. Turn so that there is a wall behind you.

Also, make certain that there is not a bookshelf or open cabinets at your back. Place these where they are not in direct line with you or your desk. This also means making sure you don’t have any bookshelves shelves facing you. Move these if you do. Also be certain you don’t have a hallway, stairs, or other entry that is exactly opposite your desk.

5. Enhance your wealth corner. Place a plant in the SE corner of your office. Get rid of spindly, weak plants. Better to have a pretty silk plant than a real plant that is dying.

6. Be recognized. Trouble getting noticed? Place a lamp in the S corner of your office for more recognition. Also, place red objects, stones, or crystals in this location. The larger the stone, the better. Definitely go for heft and girth!

7. Activate your career sector. Place a tortoise in the north corner of your office to symbolize water and support. Or, place a big picture of water here. If you want to go all out, place an aquarium here with eight gold fish and one black gold fish.

8. Get help. It’s the “who you know principle” that you want to engage. So, make sure the NW corner is activated. You want mentors or people to help you, right? If so, place a rock or geode here, or place metal objects in this location. Stereos and electronics are also good placed in the NW to bring helpful people and mentors to you. Gold, silver, or white objects are good when placed here. Try hanging a 6-rod windchime with hollow rods in this sector.

Get recognition for a special ability The south sector also pertains to the recognition you deserve and the attention you receive for a particular skill or talent, or for your lineage, say, as a member of a prominent family. When your home enjoys a beneficial south sector, recognition comes easily, friends and good times are enjoyed at your home, and you retain a good name.

When the south sector has problems…
When the south sector is afflicted, either by an annual affliction, or by a poor arrangement of flying stars, you will suffer from gossip, slander, poor social standing, lack of friends and social opportunities, and you may have an uphill battle trying to get the credit your deserve. The south can also be harmed by having water in this area, black and blue colors, or by having metallic objects here or metal colors.

Work on the south sector and improve your image
If this is your case, you may want to look at ways to boost your south sector. Even if this isn’t your particular situation, and you enjoy good recognition and social reputation, it’s important to pay attention to the south sector because you want to protect it. It’s all about your good name. You work hard to make a name for yourself, and when you have succeeded at doing it, it’s even more important to protect that.

When it comes to feng shui, one thing stands out and that is, when things are bad, you should do what you can to change things, and when things are good, you should do what you can to protect that good fortune. This is never more true than with your name.

When you have an afflicted south sector, you can experience isolation, loneliness, frustration as colleagues around you steal your thunder and your limelight, and your name isn’t held in as high regard as you would like. Take matters into your own hands and build your reputation. Here are some ideas to get you started:
SEE RED.
Red is the color of fire and the color associated with recognition. Fire heats things up and red is the color that gets you noticed. Just think about the “lady in red” and the red “power tie.” Red is a stimulant and if you are lacking in recognition and social status, then you definitely need to get some red in your home. In fact, if there’s one thing most homes suffer from, it’s a lack of red! Here’s some RED pointers:

* Paint your south sector red (unless it’s a bathroom or bedroom).
* Add red cushions or pillows in your south sector.
* Paint the south wall in your living room red.
* Add red candles or a lamp with a red shade in the south sector.

ADD SOME LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT.
Lighting is very “yang” and is a stimulus. When you want to improve your standing, add more lighting to your environment.

* Add lights in the south sector to boost energy in this corner.
* Light the front of your house — your social side.
* Put a lamp in the south corner on your desk.
* Drape tall trees or indoor plants with small, white Christmas lights.

USE YOUR PERSONAL FENG SHUI.
This puts you so that you are facing your fame direction where you sit, eat, sleep, and work. When you’re serious about becoming famous — particularly if you are in a public line of work (actor, politician, newscaster, writer, model, etc.), you want to get all the attention you can. In this case, you’ll want to make sure you maximize all the possible recognition areas you can — that means the south sector and your personal fame directions.

GET SOME FIRE CHI GOING OUTDOORS.
The outdoors is a perfect location for some extra fire energy. Outside you can add barbecues, wood furniture, and lighting in the south sector of the garden. Plants and flowers are also good stimulators in this sector, so get yourself to the garden center and load up on red-colored flowers.

Giving your south sector even some small enhancements can do a lot for your reputation, your social status, a good standing in your community. Extra attention could cause your name to be more recognizable, your credibility enhanced, and you may even become famous.
