In a perfect feng shui world, you’ll find all five elements present in a room. This helps to keep the room feeling comfortable, harmonious and balanced – and thus making you more productive, effective, and successful.

The checklist below has some of the most common problems associated with missing or excess elements. The list will help you determine what element is out of balance and the Element List will help you balance the energies in your home correctly.

Don’t forget to look at all important rooms, such as your living room, bedroom, office, and even your garden to make sure your surroundings are in good feng shui shape.

Common Problems

__Lethargy, depression, excess weight – too little fire or too much water

__Instability, clouded thinking, hyperactivity, unhappy relationships – too little earth

__Lack of opportunity, low career growth, feeling spiritually disconnected – too little water

__Poor health, lack of growth, low vitality, family disharmony – too little wood

__Nervous exhaustion, scattered thinking, busy for busy sake, disorganized – too much metal

__Impulsiveness, anger, frustration, anxiety – too much fire

__Lack of creativity, initiative, ability to analyze – too little metal

__No fun, little enjoyment or zest for life – too little fire

__Financial problems, too many bills, too little income – too little water and/or wood

__Stuck or smothering relationships, boredom, overly serious – too little earth

Element List

_____Water Element. The water element relates to business, career, and opportunities. It also has an effect on emotions, feelings and intuition. When the water element is correctly placed, career and business function more smoothly and there is progression in the climb up the corporate ladder. Water can also help create insights, make you feel inspired and spiritually connected and refreshed.

When there is too much water, there is depression, lethargy, weight gain, and isolation. Look for dark colors, blues, black, purple and wave shapes. When there’s not enough water, add water using color or shape. You can also add water figures such as shells or figurines of fish or a real aquarium.

_____Wood Element. The wood element relates to health, growth, and advancement. It is the element that relates to the family, the feet and the oldest son. When wood is correctly placed, the family is happy, growing and health is vibrant. Too much wood can cause arguments and fiery tempers.

When wood is lacking there is little expansion, life feels stalled, stuck. The shape is rectangular, similar to the tall shape of a tree trunk. To add wood energy, use brown and green colors and rectangular shapes. Dried flowers, bonsai trees and cactus are negative wood symbols and should not be used in the house.

____ Fire Element. The element of fire is the one element that is not naturally present in the earth and has to be created. It is powerful and spreads rapidly. It can keep you warm or burn down the house. Fire represents sociability, the family name, good friends, happiness and its presence indicates the success that comes with fame or public recognition.

Too much fire energy can create a home that is overly-stimulated, nerves frayed, anger and irritability rampant, not enough rest. Too little fire creates remote feelings and a lack of ambition or vision, low self-esteem, little happiness or zest for life.

The fire element is symbolized by triangle shapes, lamps, and candles. It’s also associated with the color red. Add red colors or triangle shapes or more lighting to brighten up your home and give it a punch of color and energy! Do be careful with the fire element. Too much of it can overwhelm your space.

_____Earth Element. The earth element is an element of caring, stability and calm reserve. When earth is lacking there is a lack of focus and mental clarity. The shape is square. Earth elements help make relationships strong and enduring. Too much earth can create a home that is sluggish and ineffectual. This can manifest with low motivation and apathy.

The earth element is symbolized by square shapes, stones, ceramic and crystal elements. It’s associated with the color of ochre, beige, tan, and yellow. To boost the earth element add stone or earth-related objects and golden colors. To reduce the earth element in your home add metal objects as these exhaust the earth energy.

_____Metal Element. The metal element is an element of creativity and represents the manifestation of inward flowing movement, which includes wealth. Adding metallic objects such as Chinese coins, metallic bowls and windchimes brings more metal energy to a home. Arching, oval and round shapes are associated with the metal element. Metal energy helps bring logic, precise thinking and ability to think analytically. Ceiling fans, white colors, televisions, stereos and computers are associated with metal energy.

Too much metal can cause too much movement, speaking before thinking, and being hasty. Too little metal brings mental dullness and inability to manifest because metal is a conductor and its presence in a home helps manifest quick thought, decisiveness, and movement. When you want to activate the metal element choose gold, silver, white or gray colors. If metal is too prominent, add water colors of blue and black or water elements such as fish or fountains.

Indoor Fountains 101:

1. Make sure that your fountain is large enough to hold enough water that it can go a day or two without refilling.

2. Keep the water in your fountain clean, clear, and flowing.

3. Use distilled (best choice) or bottled water ONLY in the fountain. Minerals, rust, and bacteria in tap water can corrode pumps and make the water nasty. At about .65 a gallon in the grocery store, it’s worth it to buy water. I only use about one gallon a week in my tabletop fountain.

4. Consider cannibalizing a fountain that runs out of water too quickly (which most boxed fountains are guilty of doing). Take out the pump and put it in a ceramic bowl that can hold a good amount of water.

Most of the time, the fountains that are sold only hold about 8 or 10 ounces of water and require refilling up to two times a day. Save yourself the headache of refilling by putting the pump in a large ceramic bowl (about 10″ across by 5 or 6 inches deep) with some rocks and then fill with water.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do put your fountain in the North sector of your house, office, or living room.

Do put your fountain at the front door, especially if it faces the North, East, or Southeast.

Do put a fountain in the East or Southeast portion of your home as these are compatible directions to the North, the direction of water.

Don’t put a fountain in a bedroom as this can cause problems with breathing, colds, and other ailments.

Don’t have a fountain where you can hear it from where you sleep. Shut your door or move the fountain so that you do not hear it while sleeping. To do so could cause you to have colds or respiratory problems.

Don’t have a fountain under a stairway. This can cause illness or other misfortune to come to the children in the house.

Don’t put a fountain in a bathroom.

Don’t have a fountain directly below a bedroom. Sleeping over water is not recommended.

Don’t put a fountain to the right of the front door as you are looking out of your house. This can cause extramarital affairs for the man of the house.

But to get the most out of windchimes, it’s important to note that there are several distinctions regarding windchimes, such as type, number of rods, and so on.

Knowing these distinctions will help you use windchimes effectively — and correctly – an important consideration if you are looking to achieve a specific result, such as greater recognition, more career help, or better health. Take a look at the information below to learn more about windchimes and how to use them effectively in feng shui.

Windchime Materials
Windchimes are made of a number of materials: ceramic, glass, metal, or wood. The type of material selected will depend on what you are trying to achieve and where you want to place the windchime.

Metal: Place in the west, NW, and north.
Wood/Bamboo: Place in the east, SE, and South
Ceramic/Glass: Place in the NE or SW

Hollow vs. Solid Rods
There is debate about rod types. Both solid rod and hollow rods work equally well. However, if you want to energize an area, such as your career sector in the north, you should always use hollow rods. That’s because hollow rods lift chi. Solid rods should be used when you are trying to press down chi, but hollow rods will also work just as well.

Rod Numbers Matter
As a general rule, the number of rods is relevant to where you are placing the windchime and what you intend to use it for. You should also observe number placement.

That is, the number of rods should be correct for the area where you are using it, such as using four rods in the SE because four is the number of the SE. The number of rods best for each area can be found below.

To energize an area using windchimes follow these recommendations:

North (career/Opportunities): Single metal winchimes, bell, or six-rod metal hollow metal chimes.

NE, SW (relationships, personal growth, education): Ceramic or glass chimes. Use five, eight, or two rods.

East (family relationships, health): Bamboo or wooden chimes; three rods.

Southeast (wealth): Bamboo or wooden chimes; four rods. Or choose windchimes with fish or water themes.

South (recognition, fame): Bamboo, wooden, or metal chimes with three, four, or 9 rods (9 is best).

West (children, creativity): Metal chimes with seven or six rods.

To overcome an affliction such as a toilet or problem area, use these windchime guidelines

Wood chimes: place these in the NE or SW
Metal chimes: place a metal chime in the east or SE
Ceramic/glass: place in the north sector if there is an affliction
Some Windchime Do’s and Don’ts

–Don’t hang a windchime over a door so that either you or your door hit it
–Don’t hang windchimes in trees. The metal in the tree causes the elements to clash. Wood chimes are OK in trees.
–Don’t hang a windchime over where you sit, eat, work, or sleep so that you are directly under it.

–DO hang the appropriate windchime for the direction your front door faces on either side of your front door if your door faces a parking lot, an oncoming road, or other obstacle, such as poison arrow, tree, etc.

–DO hang a windchime in an area where there are more than two doors in a straight line

–DO use a 5-rod hollow or solid chime for bathrooms in east, SE, NW, S, or west sectors

–DO use a hollow wood chime for bathrooms located in the center, SW, or NW sectors

–DO use pagoda-shaped chimes with hollow rods as energizers

–DO use six sets of six-rod hollow chimes to mark off a missing NW corner – helpful if you are looking to attract a man if you are single, gain more help from influential people, or help the patriarch of a household.

7. House to sell: place house papers in a red or purple folder.

Other ideas: love letters, book or business proposals, manuscripts, school papers, etc., into a red or purple folder.

After preparing the folder you should place a pair of feng shui flutes or simple pieces of bamboo and tie them with a black and green ribbon. Place the flutes on the documents and place on a table on the right side of the main door. Then watch and you will see how things move fast and your wishes come true!

Feng shui is based on energy. And, we all know from our basic grade-school Science classes that energy is constantly moving and changing. Therefore, feng shui is constantly moving and changing.

Because of this movement of energy (think of undulating radio waves that bounce through the air and bring us our favorite music stations), it can create prosperity, good relationships, and good health. But, for every positive there is a negative.

Practice protective feng shui first

Positive and negative, like male and female, and inextricably tied. They cannot be separated. So, you must be aware that while you can use feng shui to enhance your space for the positive benefits, you can also be subject to negative energy, and feng shui can help you to keep it from harming you.

In fact, this is what’s called “protective feng shui” and it is the number one rule of practice in feng shui. Feng shui should always be employed first and foremost to keep you and your loved ones from harm.

This is especially true if the energy is located in an area where someone is recovering from illness, or if there is an elderly, young child, or pregnant woman located here. Why? Because these are the people who are most susceptible to negative energy and therefore require the most protection.

Defining feng shui illness energy

There are several types of illness energy that can cause problems for you. These are often associated with the directions they come from and from the energies that move into different areas of the house from year to year. Here’s a quick rundown:

5 Yellow

This energy flies around to the various directions (north, south, southeast, northwest, etc.) and can cause serious health problems, particularly with the heart, spine, and bones. It will also cause problems associated with the various directions. For instance, the east is associated with the foot and legs. It can also cause general sickness.

If combined with the 2 black, it can cause serious life-threatening illnesses like heart failure or cancer. If the 5 Yellow is located here, you could suffer from a broken foot or leg. Metal objects, such as windchimes and lucky Chinese coins (6 on a red string), a laughing Buddha figure, and lush plants can help to offset the negative energy.

2 Black

The number 2 illness star can create problems for the liver, stomach, and reproductive area. If the illness star flies into the west, it can create problems for the mouth and illnesses will begin there. In the northwest, it would affect the head, but it could also affect the head and the stomach region, simultaneously. Metal windchimes (6-rods, hollow), lush plants, and 6 Chinese coins on red string are excellent ways to control the negative energy of the 2 black star.

3 Jade

This star can be deadly when it is combined with the 2 star. It can cause problems with slander, gossip, and scandal. For health, it will hurt the limbs, particularly the hands, feet, arms, legs, toes, and fingers. Red objects and bright lights are excellent cures for the 3 Jade star in the sector it flies into.

What to do when the illness energy affects you

If the illness energy is at your front door, don’t use it and use another door instead. If it is in your bedroom, try to relocate your bedroom. Always try to employ remedies, such as color or elements (bright lights, metal objects, etc.) wherever the negative energy resides. If there is a large cabinet, closet, bathroom, or storeroom close by, you can possibly “lock up” the negative energy — so count yourself lucky if you have one of those situations.

When to watch for their energy: Annually, Monthly, and Natally

The five yellow and 2 illness stars are the most serious of all. Each year, I update this information so you can follow where the energy is located and make the appropriate corrrections for the year. Be sure to check the annual feng shui every year and make the appropriate remedies. You can also follow where the energy flies each month by looking at monthly flying star charts. These can tell you each month exactly what areas to avoid and how to handle the negative energy. 

Flying Star Charts: The natal — or birth chart — for your home

Another way to know where the negative energy stars are located is to have a flying star chart cast for your particular home. This is cast using the date of construction and last renovations for your particular house. You may want to consider having a flying star chart for your home so you’ll know where the negative energy in your home resides. 

If you are interested in building a home, it’s wise to have a flying star consultation for your home so you can plan storerooms, bathrooms, and closets for the areas with the negative energy and plan your dining rooms, bedrooms, and living areas for the areas where prosperous, beneficial energy resides.

The ones who get through the problems to make their life more successful, though, are those who have some common traits. And, with the economy the way it is, a successful person will be looking at how to adapt to the situation and capitalize on the times as they are – not as they wish they would be.

In 1990, my husband and I bought a $60,000 house (below) that was run down and smelled like urine inside. We had a 12% loan to pay on this “gem.” But, our house was in a great neighborhood, and I could see that with a little effort, we could have a beautiful home in about a year – and more value in our home, too.

House – After

Everyone said this was the “worst possible time to buy a home” because values were inflated and interest was, too. But you know what? We could buy one and did, but we bought smart. We bought under the market and it put us on top after it was over.

Three more houses later and we’re in a gorgeous home and life is good. These are the lessons I’ve learned about taking positive steps in difficult times. And it’s good feng shui, too.

1. Stay involved.
As easy as it is to throw your hands in the air and sit on the sofa, that does no one any good. Look at new opportunities. Learn a skill and look for ways to hedge your bets. Just like buying an undervalued house in a good neighborhood was a good investment, you can find ways to profit even in the worst times. Look for them.

2. Put more in.
Rather than sit and wait to see what was going to happen with the recession we were in 1990, we invested in our home and our environment and it paid us back. FDR showed us with the WPA that investment into yourself is a good thing. By putting money and time into America’s infrastructure, we reaped the benefits of the good energy and improved bridges, roads and other public works – and got ourselves out of the Great Depression. Work on your landscaping, repaint a room, install organizers. Improving your home will improve your life; trust me on this one!

3. Be detached.
Feng shui is about balance, and where does a balance pivot? It balances in the center – neither negative nor positive. Learn to watch the news with detachment about the rumblings of the sky falling and don’t fall into the trap of believing that the sky really is falling. Detachment will keep you balanced in the face of hysteria of either the positive or the negative kind.

4. Seek out opportunities.
Continue to make efforts on your behalf and don’t give in to apathy. Learn to be invaluable at work and to your clients and learn a new work skill. Find something unique that you can do – or a unique offer or twist on what you already do to improve your prospects.

5. Be daring, be BOLD.
The worst thing you can do is sit on the sidelines like a cardboard cutout in a store window that watches the parade go past you. An Israeli friend of mine recalled a story about a bomb that exploded close to a restaurant where he was eating with an American friend. The friend was alarmed and wanted to run out. The American asked the Israeli why he wasn’t running away from the restaurant. “Because this fish is so good,” he recalled licking his fingers. My mother was hugely disappointed that I didn’t cancel a trip to London in the early 80’s because the IRA was setting off bombs. There will always be crises and catastrophes. Enjoy the fish every chance you get.
