Feng Shui Your Computer — How Clearing Old Files Can Make You

July 12, 2009 by Kathryn Weber

45383326thb1Computers are a wonderful tool for helping us communicate with friends around the
world, produce presentations and documents, balance our checkbooks and, in short, run our businesses and our lives.

There is no doubt that we are completely dependent upon computers today and few homes are without a personal computer. Few of us are able to work when our computers stop working because of bugs, viruses or a log-jam of files.

To make yourself more efficient at work and in your business, you should take steps to ensure that your computer is a lean, mean, computing machine.

When your computer isn’t in top form, you don’t think well, your mood is colored with frustration (and anger, sometimes!) and you don’t work as well when you feel this way. Most importantly it takes you out of what I call “receive mode” — that’s the where energy flows to you bringing you opportunities, income, prestige and advancement.

These steps will help you clear the decks and keep your computer in top form – all while making you more efficient, able to think more clearly, and opening you up to more opportunities — and keeping you in receive mode!

1. Clean files for clear thinking.
When our computers are a mess, it’s hard for us to be efficient or to think clearly. That’s because when files are hard to find, we get frustrated and annoyed and this clouds our interactions and our daily mood. Organization equals efficiency – and the ability to think clearly. Clear out old, rarely used files and programs.

2. Cords create havoc.
Whenever we see clutter and mess, it brings our energy level down. One of the most unattractive aspects of computers are all the cords. Corral cords with zip-ties and Velcro wrappers. Pull stray cords to one side and anchor them to a small cup hook so that you don’t accidentally pull them with your feet. Otherwise, you might constantly find yourself in “a tangle” with people and situations, too.

3. Create a beautiful view.
Because I like to focus on what I want, I place a beautiful waterfall image on my screensaver. Of course, water is wealth in feng shui! Use beautiful views of fish, waterfalls, fields, or streams to create a window where there is none. The screen of your computer should inspire you when you see it and give you a view you love.

4. Protection first.
In feng shui, the first priority should always be protective feng shui. This is especially true of your computer. When you work on the Internet, it’s important that you use some kind of protection like Norton, McAfee or other form of firewall to protect you from people who might try to take your sensitive information. This also will help maintain your computer’s speed – and that helps you to be more efficient too.

5. Old, outdated files hold you back.
Do you have old projects or old files that you still need but not every day? Get an external hard drive. Think of these as a “mini-storage room” for your computer. You can get a huge external hard drive that allows you to dump huge files (like photos and music) on there and get the old files that you rarely use OFF your machine. When your machine moves fast, so do you. Plus, by clearing out the old stuff, such as old client and business files, you create room for NEW clients and business to come to you.

6. Clean screens help you see clearly.
When your screen is full of dirty, greasy fingerprints, you can’t think clearly or “see” what you need to do at work. Make it a point to AVOID touching your computer screen and regularly clean it off.

Be a Feng Shui Consultant-10 Most Frequently Asked Questions

July 9, 2009 by Kathryn Weber

become_consultant_lady_phone

Many of my readers and even clients ask about working as a feng shui consultant. It’s a career that doesn’t have much written about it — especially from an insider’s view. And many people think it’s a New Age-y kind of career, but it’s much more than just good feelings! Feng shui is about black and white principles of placement, not just esoteric thoughts and holding the right kind of intentions.

We don’t make the environment, but we can make it suit us and we can learn how to adapt and cultivate our environments — much like a garden.

As a feng shui consultant, you can show you clients how to create home and office environments for better health, improved business, greater opportunities, and yes, more prosperity.

Here’s a basic outline of some of the most commonly asked questions.

1. Do I need to speak Chinese or know Chinese culture?
No, you don’t, but it’s a help if you have an understanding of the culture because of its influence on feng shui. You can pick up information about the culture by reading, traveling or even speaking with Chinese friends or neighbors. Visiting museums and Chinese cultural exhibits is another way. If you can travel to China or Asia where feng shui is often practiced – such as Singapore or Kuala Lumpur – you can learn a lot about Chinese customs and feng shui, too.

2. Do I have to be a new-age kind of person?
Many people have an idea that feng shui is very woo-woo or airy fairy and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Feng shui is basically thousands of years of plain old common sense. As a practicing consultant, I’m always amazed at how often clients tell me my recommendations are common sense and I’ll often remind them of what Mark Twain said, “Common sense isn’t so common.” Actually, the more down to earth and pragmatic you are, the better. But feng shui is big enough for people who enjoy the mystical as well as those who (like me) or more practical-minded.

3. Is there a demand for feng shui consultants?
Yes! In certain areas of the country and the world, there is great demand. California, the East Coast, and Hawaii probably have the highest demand, but consultants are also sought after in Las Vegas, large metropolitan areas such as Miami, Houston, and Denver. Even in the very remote area where I live, I am often amazed at the people who find me and want feng shui consultation. My largest and longest client resulted in a phone call from a hospital and school construction firm based in Corpus Christi, Texas!

4. What personal qualities make a good feng shui consultant?
You must be a person who cares about your clients and who puts their needs and concerns first. Having good communication skills is also a plus because you will need to deliver both positive and negative information.

Another highly prized skill is the ability to provide options to your clients and give them choices. Perhaps the best skill? Being a good listener. Your clients will want to share their very personal details of their lives and they need to know you can hear them and that their details are confidential and that they a talking to someone who cares about helping them.

5. How much money can I make as a feng shui consultant?
Some of this depends on where you live, but as a going rate, I would say you can safely charge about $250 an hour for an in-person consultation or about $500 for a two-hour consultation. If you just have two clients per week that adds up to $4000 per month.

Plus, you get the tax advantages of being in business, allowing you to write off mileage and any costs incurred getting to and from your appointments. You can also charge by the square foot of the space if you are involved in a large commercial project, for example. A fee of fifty cents per square foot would net you $2,000 on a 4,000 square foot office building assessment.

6. Are there other ways I can make money in feng shui?
Oh, yes. You can take your business online and work as an online consultant doing telephone consultations. You can also begin an import-export business and sell feng shui products. Lillian Too has franchises for her World of Feng Shui shops. You could become a shop owner if you like.

You can also work with builders, architects, designers and decorators, and professional organizers. Some feng shui consultants go on to become authors, teachers and bloggers! I’ve taken my remote location and turned my feng shui consulting practice into a lucrative business that pays me over six figures – and allows me to work in pajamas if I want to.

7. Do I need training to work as a feng shui consultant?
It isn’t necessary, but if you want to be taken seriously and be able to command higher prices for your services, you should. Training is also important for you because you will have the confidence to speak knowledgeably and have no problem asking for your fees because you can say you are trained and certified – and a lot of consultants out there can’t say that. And, if you’re serious about being in this business, you should be trained and certified.

8. How do I find clients?
You have to decide who you most want to work with and how your business model will be set up. If you’re a consultant, it pays to network and to have your services listed with feng shui directories and other professional sites. If you want to work with the more esoteric side of feng shui, such as Black Hat Sect, you may want to contact local New Age bookstores or advertise in New Age publications.

If you are a classical Chinese feng shui consultant, you may want to advertise in home and business publications, contact local real estate, architecture and design professionals and advertise in their trade publications. Word of mouth is another invaluable way to begin your career. Trust me: once you have a few successful clients, they’ll start looking for you!

9. What kind of work do most consultants do for clients?
When you do feng shui consultation work for clients you may be asked to advise them on color selection, site placement if they are wanting to start construction, give an opinion on whether or not to buy a certain house, help them to correct problems in their lives, such as marital problems, health concerns, or even help with landscaping or where to place a swimming pool.

Some clients have very simple needs and may not know what they want, they just know they want their home or office “feng shui-d.” In this case, you tell them what they need to know about the space – such as harsh illness energy, or great wealth potential (they love that!). It’s important that you remain balanced and give them both sides and offer ways to handle negatives and boost positives.

10. What’s the best part about being a feng shui consultant?
There are many wonderful things about being a consultant, but it comes down to two main things – helping people and having freedom. When it comes to helping people, working as a consultant gives you the ability to help someone correct a problem with their home or business that results in more abundance and prosperity to helping their children have more friends at school and everything in between. Sometimes you help save a marriage; other times, it’s salvaging a business.

It’s obvious that helping people is its own reward. But as a career, working as a consultant gives me the flexibility and options few other careers have. My business has allowed me to live the way that I want instead of the way I have to if I had a regular job. In other words, feng shui has given me a freedom in my life to work the way I like and earn a handsome living. But it’s freedom combined with an income that I set and is limited by how much I want or don’t want to work — and I’m helping people. What could be better than that? :)

Boost Your Career With Powerful Feng Shui

Enhancing careers with feng shui is a popular subject in feng shui. Second to generating wealth, energizing the career sector ranks high in interest among those interested in using feng shui to better their lives. It makes sense due to the amount of time we spend at our jobs. It also is understandable because to have a successful career enables us to make better decisions for ourselves and our families.

By this, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you simply make more money, because money doesn’t solve all the ills of career problems. Of course, it doesn’t hurt. However, there are plenty of people out there making good salaries but unhappy with their respective careers.

When you energize areas that you would like to improve, it’s possible to open up a range of possibilities. For instance, by energizing your career sector, your job may suddenly become better, or something new and better will be coming to you that you hadn’t expected at all, such as a business opportunity.

But this is the price of making changes — you get more changes in your life, and therefore, more choices! And, that’s what you usually want in your life: more opportunities and choices to create greater happiness for yourself and your family.

There are two critical areas to enhance if you want to improve your career: your house and your office. Below are ideas for both. However, these are not ALL the possible suggestions; only some of the most basic ones.

STEP ONE: Your Home

6 Key Steps

 1. Look north. Make sure the north sector of your home is in good order. If your north sector is missing or if there is a toilet here, activate the north sector of your living room and office.

 2. If your bedroom is in the north: This can be enhanced by decorating with blue or black, a picture of water (not overly large, however), and metal (preferably gold-colored) objects.

3. A north-facing home: Make the entrance to your home as attractive as possible to invite new opportunities. Make it neat and easy to come into by removing obstacles, blockages, dying plants, worn out welcome mats, etc.

By the way, DON’T buy welcome mats with your name on it you’ll be walking on your good name! Place an image of a turtle or fish here. Be sure to block any views that go straight through from the front of the house to the back or you’ll be missing opportunities (and losing money!).

4. Look south. Display peacock feathers in the south portion of the home and keep this area well-lit. The south represents recognition. A grouping of nine candles would be excellent here as well. Consider painting the south room in your house red, orange, or a shade of red.

5. Welcome career opportunities. Keep a light in the entrance to your home turned on. A chandelier with crystal prisms that cast the different colors about the entryway is especially good.

Or, hang a crystal below your light to cast colored prisms about the foyer. These are especially helpful if your stairs face or end close to the front door; good opportunities go right on out the door!

6. Add water to the front of your home. Consider putting in a water fountain (on the left side of the door as you look out of the house) inside the house or outside. (A water feature on the right side of the house invites cheating in the marriage.) If you put in a water feature outside your home, make sure the water appears to be flowing toward the house. This is one of the best ways to bring opportunities to your door.

Step Two: Your Office

8 Key Elements

1. Sit in a power position by facing (but not in direct line with) the door. Don’t sit with your back to the door ever. If your furnishings in your office or cubicle are built in, then turn your computer so that you can see someone coming from either your left or right side.

2. Tap your pa kua number. Face your personal best directions if at all possible, but never ignoring #1 above. Use as many of your personal best directions as possible!

3. Stop gossip. If gossip is a problem in your career, get a statue of a rooster and place it on your desk to look at anyone coming into the office. This will help curb some of the talk in the office.

4. Get support. This is extremely important for a good career and why you should have something solid behind you. If you have a window at your back, you will suffer from lack of support. Turn so that there is a wall behind you.

Also, make certain that there is not a bookshelf or open cabinets at your back. Place these where they are not in direct line with you or your desk. This also means making sure you don’t have any bookshelves shelves facing you. Move these if you do. Also be certain you don’t have a hallway, stairs, or other entry that is exactly opposite your desk.

5. Enhance your wealth corner. Place a plant in the SE corner of your office. Get rid of spindly, weak plants. Better to have a pretty silk plant than a real plant that is dying.

6. Be recognized. Trouble getting noticed? Place a lamp in the S corner of your office for more recognition. Also, place red objects, stones, or crystals in this location. The larger the stone, the better. Definitely go for heft and girth!

7. Activate your career sector. Place a tortoise in the north corner of your office to symbolize water and support. Or, place a big picture of water here. If you want to go all out, place an aquarium here with eight gold fish and one black gold fish.

8. Get help. It’s the “who you know principle” that you want to engage. So, make sure the NW corner is activated. You want mentors or people to help you, right? If so, place a rock or geode here, or place metal objects in this location. Stereos and electronics are also good placed in the NW to bring helpful people and mentors to you. Gold, silver, or white objects are good when placed here. Try hanging a 6-rod windchime with hollow rods in this sector.

Feng Shui for FAME: See YOUR name in lights!

April 2, 2009 by Kathryn Weber

marqueeFame is a tricky thing. Some people seem to get recognition so easily while others toil endlessly to get their fifteen minutes. Fame, or more specifically, the south sector (or gua on the bagua) in feng shui, is related to status. This status has a number of meanings, from actual fame and celebrity, to the social standing in your community.

Get recognition for a special ability The south sector also pertains to the recognition you deserve and the attention you receive for a particular skill or talent, or for your lineage, say, as a member of a prominent family. When your home enjoys a beneficial south sector, recognition comes easily, friends and good times are enjoyed at your home, and you retain a good name.

When the south sector has problems…
When the south sector is afflicted, either by an annual affliction, or by a poor arrangement of flying stars, you will suffer from gossip, slander, poor social standing, lack of friends and social opportunities, and you may have an uphill battle trying to get the credit your deserve. The south can also be harmed by having water in this area, black and blue colors, or by having metallic objects here or metal colors.

Work on the south sector and improve your image
If this is your case, you may want to look at ways to boost your south sector. Even if this isn’t your particular situation, and you enjoy good recognition and social reputation, it’s important to pay attention to the south sector because you want to protect it. It’s all about your good name. You work hard to make a name for yourself, and when you have succeeded at doing it, it’s even more important to protect that.

When it comes to feng shui, one thing stands out and that is, when things are bad, you should do what you can to change things, and when things are good, you should do what you can to protect that good fortune. This is never more true than with your name.

When you have an afflicted south sector, you can experience isolation, loneliness, frustration as colleagues around you steal your thunder and your limelight, and your name isn’t held in as high regard as you would like. Take matters into your own hands and build your reputation. Here are some ideas to get you started:
red lampSEE RED.
Red is the color of fire and the color associated with recognition. Fire heats things up and red is the color that gets you noticed. Just think about the “lady in red” and the red “power tie.” Red is a stimulant and if you are lacking in recognition and social status, then you definitely need to get some red in your home. In fact, if there’s one thing most homes suffer from, it’s a lack of red! Here’s some RED pointers:

* Paint your south sector red (unless it’s a bathroom or bedroom).
* Add red cushions or pillows in your south sector.
* Paint the south wall in your living room red.
* Add red candles or a lamp with a red shade in the south sector.

ADD SOME LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT.
Lighting is very “yang” and is a stimulus. When you want to improve your standing, add more lighting to your environment.

* Add lights in the south sector to boost energy in this corner.
* Light the front of your house — your social side.
* Put a lamp in the south corner on your desk.
* Drape tall trees or indoor plants with small, white Christmas lights.

USE YOUR PERSONAL FENG SHUI.
This puts you so that you are facing your fame direction where you sit, eat, sleep, and work. When you’re serious about becoming famous — particularly if you are in a public line of work (actor, politician, newscaster, writer, model, etc.), you want to get all the attention you can. In this case, you’ll want to make sure you maximize all the possible recognition areas you can — that means the south sector and your personal fame directions.

To determine your personal recognition direction, go to the Red Lotus Letter Kua Calculator page and find out your Kua number. You’ll be guided to the correct direction for success and recognition.

GET SOME FIRE CHI GOING OUTDOORS.
The outdoors is a perfect location for some extra fire energy. Outside you can add barbecues, wood furniture, and lighting in the south sector of the garden. Plants and flowers are also good stimulators in this sector, so get yourself to the garden center and load up on red-colored flowers.

Giving your south sector even some small enhancements can do a lot for your reputation, your social status, a good standing in your community. Extra attention could cause your name to be more recognizable, your credibility enhanced, and you may even become famous.

Your Feng Shui Business Building Checklist

April 2, 2009 by Kathryn Weber

fs_bus_bld_checklstFeng shui is big business. Really. A certain pharmaceutical company keeps a feng shui consultant on a million dollar retainer and doesn’t make a move or change to its offices without talking with their consultant first.

Many businesses think that feng shui means Asian decorating style. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Feng shui isn’t just a “Zen” experience or a method for selecting sofa colors and decorative accessories. It’s about seeing your environment in a whole new way. See if this doesn’t get you thinking!

___1. Create flow. No matter whether you have a retail business or you’re a solo-preneur working from home, flow is critical. In the retail setting, it’s important that shelves and goods are pulled away from the walls and that customers can walk around them. If you have a home office, pull your desk away from a wall and place it executive style in the room. This means energy can flow around your desk – and that means business.

___2. Big behinds pay. What’s behind you really matters. (No, not like that! ;-0) If you work at a desk at home or in an office, it’s vital to have a solid wall of support behind you and not a window or door or having your back to the door. If you have a retail business, what’s behind your business? Big buildings BEHIND your business or office will give you good support. A big business front and a little behind isn’t as supportive as a little front and a big behind.

___3. Get off the floor. Make sure that your name is prominently placed and positioned where you look UP at it – even if you work from home! Frame your business name and hang it up on the wall behind you. If you have a rug printed with your name at the front of your business, then people are walking on your good name. Get rid of it.

___4. Signs of life. Every business needs living energy. A vase of flowers or a pretty plant all make a difference in the energy of your business. Keep lush, healthy plants or fresh flowers in your business. I know a restaurant that is always busy and the proprietor maintains a vase full of long-stem roses right by the register.

___5. Don’t get cut off. When you work at a desk or at a register, don’t work behind L-shapes. These become like a hatchet that cuts off flow and can actually be harmful to you. Remove desk returns to stop them from emitting harsh, cutting energy that symbolically cuts you in half!

___6. Put power in the power position. Always place executives at the rear of the building. This is similar to generals standing behind the troops. Executives should be able to see the “troops” at work and should never be placed close to the entrance with the troops behind the general!

___7. Keep your surroundings bright. By keeping your office and business well-lit, you are infusing your space with yang energy – so important for keeping sales coming.

___8. Watch what’s in front of you. What is opposite your desk or the front door to your business? The view from here can often determine your success. If there’s an oncoming street, this can create severe poison arrow energy. If you have a bookshelf opposite your desk, you’ll feel under attack. Make the view a pleasant, uplifting one and you’ll invite prosperity to your business.

Creating Wealthy Habits to Manifest Prosperity

January 4, 2009 by Kathryn Weber

6 Key Habits that Magnetize You with Wealth Energy

There’s a saying that success is just the accumulation of good habits. It’s true. The more you do to help yourself and to be successful, the more successful – and prosperous – you’ll become. Success and the wealth and acclaim that comes with it isn’t as much a secret as much as it is a habit.

Having a happy home life, successful career, ability to go and buy what you like when you want it, this brings happiness is true wealth. There are many people who have money, but lack wealth. Recently, my husband and I are shopping for a new home. The houses are beautiful, but there is little furniture, or what’s there is of poor quality.

It’s as though the owner’s money went into the homes, but there was no money to furnish the beautiful home with beautiful belongings. Is that a wealthy homeowner? No.

That’s the paradox of wealth. Having money (or a big house or a nice car) doesn’t mean you are wealthy any more than breathing makes you healthy. Having real wealth is about having a beautiful home, but also the ability to furnish it beautifully.

Real wealth means you may have a wonderful car and beautiful home – but you also have accumulated wealth. Accumulated wealth brings security, comfort, and is relaxing.

But bringing money into your life requires healthy wealth habits to help maintain it. I see clients often who say they have plenty of money coming in when I ask them how their financial status is, yet their homes are like leaking ships – and I wonder how long they will stay afloat. You may be at the point in this program that you are thinking you have too much feng shui to do!

I promise you, though, that if you will work at it and build on it, the feng shui you have built will gain momentum and will increase with time — and accumulate. My goal is to help you to develop true wealth – the kind that helps you to relax, feel confident and secure – and have fun with it, too!

If you’ve read the passage “Paradox of Our Age” by the Dalai Lama, you’ll understand the wealth energy that I am trying to impart to you. It’s about true wealth; not just money. Real wealth is the abundant, accumulated resource that’s there for you to use as you wish when you wish, and that keeps your family and security safeguarded.

Money is easy, but simple money can become meaningless when it is only money and not wealth. Creating wealthy habits will have the effect of lifting your personal energy – and that is a powerful attractant to real wealth.

1. Repair broken energy.

Broken energy comes from, well, broken things. When your door scrapes against the threshold, it imbues your home with negative, irrigating energy.

If your dishes are chipped, you are eating off of broken energy. This drains positive wealth energy and makes your house drained and more yin. Our houses must be energized and broken things bring the energy level down — and that affects our prosperity. Keep your clothes, your home, your car and your doors in good working order. What’s broken that is draining your energy?

2. Putting wealth in, not just out.
Too often in our lives, we become accustomed to money flowing in and out of our lives — and not accumulating. The money comes in, the bills get paid, and the money flows right back out again. Energizing your home and life for wealth means putting energy INTO it.

This includes making deposits into your accounts. Get into the habit of putting money in instead of just paying out. This energy builds over time — and so does your bank account. And you’d be surprised how that will make you feel.

Do you even have a retirement or savings account? If so, set up automatic weekly or monthly withdrawals. Or, join Bank of America’s program that rounds off purchases to the nearest dollar and puts the extra amount into a savings account.

Do you buy a large Diet Coke or coffee every day? Stop and then put that money into a piggy bank. A $1.50 drink each day amounts to $547 at the end of a year! Are you drinking $500’s worth of diet sodas? What’s important is that you see yourself as ACCUMULATING money, not just being a pass-thru for it.

3. Energize your home.
Keep your home energized with fresh paint, lush landscaping. Just like an employer matching your 401K, match your home with an investment in beautifying and updating your surroundings. Unlike a car, money put into a home will be an investment that will pay you back in energy — and if you sell it — in dollars. More importantly, by energizing your home, you magnetize your home for wealth energy.

Landscaping is a very important ingredient because it brings vital dragon energy to the home. Lush flowers, trees and plants are healthy and invigorating and lift the energy of the house.

4. Energize your image.
Many times when someone doesn’t feel good or like they look good, they have a stuffed closet. A closet that’s rammed with shoes and clothes that are outdated will cause you to feel outdated too! If you are ready to “look the part” of a wealthy, happy and abundantly prosperous person, turn to your closet to get rid of the clothing that no longer suits you or is part of an outdated image.

If you have weight to lose, this could be even more important for you! Pare down your closet – including those articles of clothing that you used to fit it but haven’t in a long time. Wealth energy means moving energy and when you are stuck in an old look and outdated image, this can stop the energy flowing to you.

5. Energize your finances.
Get a red wallet and checkbook, put your investment and banking account information and statements in red folders, write checks in red ink. Put bills into blue or black folders so they aren’t energized. Have a small basket to hold bills — and keep it small so your bills stay small. Clean out and organize your financial files and your purse or wallet. Streamline your credit cards so that you don’t have too many, limiting them to three or less. Add grains of sea salt to your wallet to “draw” money, just like sea water will draw soreness away from achy muscles!

6. Believe.
Do you believe you can be wealthy and prosperous? Do you think you deserve it? Do you really FEEL that way or are you just intellectualizing it? It’s so important that you believe you are worthy of being a prosperous person, someone who doesn’t just make a living, but makes a life with the money you earn. Observe your thoughts about wealth and money and see if it’s really not you who is standing in the way of money.

Lillian Too always said that you must believe you deserve abundance before abundance will make its way to you. Spend time thinking about your thoughts about money and wealth and ask yourself, what could you do today, right now, that could change your financial picture?
