About Feng Shui
Every day more and more people are hearing about feng shui, and it is being used to enhance spaces that range from factories to farms.
But what exactly is feng shui? It is an exciting science that goes back several thousand years to the I Ching Book of Changes.
Often called the Chinese Art of Placement, feng shui is more correctly an art of alignment. By aligning the home to energies that are present in the earth and air, we can tap those energies for our advantage and enjoy happier relationships, better finances, more robust health, and improved life overall.
The importance of your environment
People today are much more sensitive to environments. For years, we have become aware of the relationship of our own well-being to our earth’s well-being. To be good to our outer environment by recycling, reducing litter, and caring for our oceans and rivers benefits everyone.
However, today people are looking to their own homes and offices as a way to affect change in the “inner environments” of their lives and businesses so they can be more productive and prosperous. Feng Shui can help you accomplish this.
In Feng Shui, objects, color, and the landscape all influence the inhabitants and visitors to a home or business. Because the environment in homes and offices is alive with unseen energy, certain elements which correspond to aspects of life, such as health, wealth, or relationships can be either negatively or positively impacted.
When the energy is correct, occupants are more successful in their lives and businesses and life progresses more harmoniously and easily. Feng shui’s goal is to make certain that the energy, called “chi,” is flowing and correct for the occupants of the building or dwelling.
Get feng shui right and everyone is in harmony
Like radio waves bouncing through the air, chi exists in a home or business, radiating out to inhabitants and visitors alike. And, just like radios, fine-tuning is all important. If your favorite radio station, for example, is 105.1, then dialing 105.2 won’t pick it up, or if it does, the music is distorted and unclear.
Get the correct station number and you’re making beautiful music. Make the correct adjustments in your home or office, and everyone is singing along.
Understanding the differences and confusion surrounding feng shui
Be aware that there are numerous “schools” of feng shui and this creates confusion because the different schools work differently. What is important is that you find a way that works for you. If one school works well, then stick with it; if it doesn’t, then try the other schools.
In America, the Tibetan Black Hat Sect (BHS) school of feng shui is the most popular, and most books in America feature BHS teachings. Authors such as Sarah Rossbach and Nancy SantoPietro are just two who have written feng shui books from the BHS perspective. BHS teachings rely on the opening to the room for administering feng shui.
In China and Asia, schools such as Compass, Flying Star, and Form or Landscape prevail. The most widely-published and most noted classical feng shui author is Lillian Too. Classical feng shui relies on actual compass directions as the way to prescribe feng shui applications.
How to make feng shui work for you
In feng shui, there are several key areas to concentrate your energies, regardless of which school you follow. One is the front entrance. This is extremely important because it is considered the “mouth” of the building and it is the primary place where chi enters.
Of course, if you never use your front door, then the door that is most often used is considered the mouth. This area should be clean, well-lit, prominent, and attractive in order to derive the greatest benefit.
Other critical areas are the living room, kitchen, and bathroom. For instance, the living room can be considered a small “house.” In other words, you can activate the entire house in the living room alone by the placement of particular objects and symbols.
Bathrooms also play a crucial role in feng shui and their placement can often dictate the wealth, degree of marital happiness, or health of the occupants of a house. Bathrooms are very difficult to place correctly in a house, and for that reason, should always be treated with feng shui remedies.
Bedrooms also play an important role because these are the rooms where you rejuvenate yourself after a long day. Certain rules should be adhered to when it comes to the bedroom. For instance, beds should be placed against a solid wall versus a window.
They should also not share a wall with a toilet or be placed over an empty room, such as a garage or patio area. They should also be gender-neutral and not have mirrors, plants, or water in them. Mirrors in the bedroom create unrest, difficulties in marriages, and plants and water in the bedroom are simply not good for the occupants’ health.
The most popular place just might be your house
Be aware that there are pitfalls to feng shui. In learning and incorporating feng shui into your space, you will begin to draw more and more people to your home or office. That is because your space will unconsciously resonate with everyone who visits.
That resonance is based on the proper alignment and harmonious effect you have created that is both appealing and magnetizing! This effect will create a feeling in your houseguests that they won’t want to leave, make your parties suddenly become more successful, and provide you and your family or employees an overall higher quality of life that will make you feel more contented in your surroundings than you had ever dreamed possible. Not such a bad thing, is it?
