Beds are one of the most energetically-packed pieces of furniture in our homes. We sleep in them every night, having dreams both sweet and worrisome. Our sick days are often spent in bed, and of course, our closest, most intimate relationship is spent — and symbolized — by a bed. Over time, those soft sheets, comforters, pillows and mattresses absorb a lot of emotion, like tears when we’re upset, joy when we’re cuddling close together, or worry as we lie awake at night unable to sleep because of something on our minds we can’t let go of.
These reasons illustrate the many ways a bed absorbs all kinds of energy. It also explains why it’s a good idea to clear your bed and bedroom from time to time. Some of the most significant times to do a clearing of your bed include:
- Illness
- Arguments
- Lack of intimacy
- Loneliness
- Death
- Divorce or breakup
- Sadness
- Spates of bad luck
- No love relationship
It’s also a good idea to do a clearing on a bed from time to time simply because you sleep on it every night, and the mere act of sweating, sleeping and the contact with skin over the years can build up in your mattress and linens. If it’s been more than ten years since you’ve bought your mattress, this is good time to consider buying another one. It’s also important if you’ve had a divorce or a death on a particular mattress.
A major illness or death really calls for replacing the mattress, as does divorce.
When that isn’t possible, having a good mattress cleaning and bedroom clearing is another way to infuse some new clean, and beneficial, energy to your bed and your bedroom. These steps will help you clear your bedroom so that you sleep better, feel better and clear out old, stale energies. Be sure to read all the steps before undertaking the clearing.
Step 1. Sunbathe. If possible, moving your mattress outdoors for a day full of sunshine and clean air can do wonders for it. In the old days, many housewives called this ‘sun bleaching.’ If you’ve ever slept on sheets that flapped in the sun and breezes of a clothesline, you’ll know how it smells so beautifully fresh and clean. If that’s not possible, you can use other ways to freshen your bed and bedroom. Try to give your mattress a full day in the sun if you can.
Step 2. Fresh air and vacuum. Open your windows to let your bedroom air out. Pull blinds all the way up and tie curtains back. Open all furniture drawers and doors in the room. Use a vacuum and vacuum the mattress, under the bed, and around all the baseboards of the room, making sure to move and vacuum under all furniture.
Step 3. Thoroughly clean and dust. Household dust is very yin and it holds on to negative energies, particularly when negative things have happened. Make sure that you dust the tops of your doorways, tops of tall furniture, dust the ceiling corners of cobwebs, and dust thoroughly behind the headboard, wiping down the whole surface of the bed frame. Take your linens to the cleaners, wash in hot water and hang in the sun, or replace them with new bedding, making sure to wash before putting on the bed.
Step 4. Clear with sound. Using a bell or singing bowl, walk from the door of the bedroom ringing your bell, going in a clockwise position, paying extra attention to corners of the bedroom. If there has been a serious illness, argument, bad luck or divorce, ring the bell over the bed in a circle three times, ending back at the door, and circling the door three times.
Step 5. Use fire and smoke. Light a pretty natural scented candle such as lavender. Next, light sage or other natural incense and go through the same pattern with your smoke as you did in step #4 with the bell. Close all the doors and drawers.
Step 6. Refresh your mattress. Using essential oils such as lavender, lemon, rosemary, make a spray using water that has been set in the sun for at least 4 hours. Spritz the mattress with the spray lightly.
Step 7. Make your bed. This is a time when you can help create a separation between you and your mattress and the old energies it holds, by adding a new topper if your mattress is lumpy or uncomfortable, or adding a new mattress protector pad. Make the bed with your new or freshly washed sheets. Close your blinds, and holding the intention of your new, clean mattress and cleared bedroom, and then blow out the candle.
Sleep well.
