In feng shui, the eight corners of luck are related to the different directions and corners of your home. In all, there are eight types of aspirations – those things that make our life enjoyable. Aspirations such as love, health, happy families, opportunities and income all make up a happy, satisfying life. The aspirations are each tied to a different direction, such as north or southeast or west. These can be seen on the feng shui “bagua” or map.
To use the bagua, it’s important to know what direction your home faces.
Most homes have a door that faces the street. Once you know what direction your house is when you look out the front door and measuring with a compass, you can turn the bagua to line it up with that corner. So, if your house faces west and you see the setting sun each day, you would line up the bagua with the west at your front door and the east is at the back side of the house, and all the other corners fall in line.
You should always energize all corners of your home to bring you the best and brightest opportunities and keep your life harmonized, balanced and feeling happy and fulfilled. That’s true even if you use personal feng shui and know that a certain direction is better for you than another.
Always activate all eight corners to bring your life, home and everyone who lives there with you the best possible luck and good fortune.
When enhancing your eight lucky sectors, avoid adding water or plants in bathrooms or bedrooms. You should also avoid activating laundry rooms, bathrooms, garages or kitchens. Instead activate the corresponding corner of the living room.
Let’s discover the sectors one by one and how to activate and enhance them.

The North Sector: Career, Opportunity & Income
This corner relates to money. Although many think of the southeast wealth corner as the money corner, the north corner is related to money you earn, business opportunities and career advancement. The southeast wealth corner is related to accrued money versus your week in and week out earnings, salary, paycheck, and your business or career success that corresponds to the north corner.
Activate the north sector of your house or living room with a fountain or a picture of water. Paint the wall where the north corner is blue or purple, or add some black colors (if you’re daring!). Add a mirror here and some figures of fish or picture of water or waterfall. Metal colors (silver, white, gray, or gold) and metallic objects are also auspicious when placed here and activate the water energy that brings opportunity and money.
The Northeast Sector: Education, Wisdom and Decision-Making
The northeast corner is the corner of knowledge, wisdom, and education. It’s also the corner of decision-making. The corner is directly related to study and writing as well. When you want to feel inspired and have a sense of satisfaction and well-being, it’s wise to enhance this corner with earth objects like stones, crystals or globes of the earth. Yellow, beige and taupe colors are enhancing to this corner and can help “ground” your mind if clarity is lacking.
You can help this corner by the addition of good lighting as this energizes the earth energy of the northeast corner. When the northeast corner is missing and your family has children in school, they may not progress in school or have problems with tests and suffer with poor grades. Further, with this sector missing, thinking clearly and making good, solid decisions for yourself may be more difficult. You may find that your life is plagued by a number of small mistakes that clear thinking would have corrected.
The East Sector: Health & Family Relationships
The east sector is the sector of health and happy family relationships. Difficulties in this sector can severely affect children – especially the oldest son. This is because the east sector is the sector of the oldest son. It can also cause the family not to grow or represent disharmony and family squabbles.
When your health isn’t up to par, look for problems in the east corner of the house, living room, or your bedroom. Add plants here, blue, purple or black colors as their water energy feeds the wood energy of the east. Even pictures of trees or water is an excellent way to enhance the east corner.
The Southeast Sector: Wealth & Prosperity
This is the sector most everyone is concerned about: wealth. When this sector is missing, bills are mounting, finances burn up, and accumulating wealth is difficult if not impossible. The southeast sector is also the sector of the oldest daughter. When this sector is missing, the oldest daughter will have difficulty succeeding at her endeavors and will find that she is often frustrated and ineffective in her life. Or, there may be problems with the hips or legs.
Because this is the corner of small wood, adding water elements here and plants is especially good for activating your ability to save money. This could be an aquarium with some happy fish, a lovely image of fish or water scenes, and some pretty flowers. Keep this corner protected and energized to give your life some “financial cushion.” Green, blue, purple and black colors in this corner are especially auspicious.
The South Sector: Fame & Recognition
The south sector represents your success and recognition luck. When this sector is missing, it’s possible that you or your family has difficulties attracting recognition – and that’s what often leads to success. This is especially true if you or your family is involved in businesses or ventures that are dependent upon recognition and marketing. It’s also possible that reputation and family name will be hurt or your social life will be damaged in some way or friendships will be lacking.
Enhance this corner with images of the sun, birds, and red colors. Don’t go overboard on red colors, though; a little red color goes a long way. A red lamp, a vase of red flowers, or some red objects is enough to enhance the corner of success. A picture of a group of happy people is another way to enhance your missing south sector. Hang this picture in the south sector of your living room to get some beneficial “fire” energy here that will light up your reputation, not to mention friendships, fame, recognition for work well-done, and standing in your community.
The Southwest Sector: Love, Marriage & Marriage Prospects
This sector is related to love, marriage, relationships, the woman/women of the house, the matriarch, and romance. Therefore, if this sector is missing, the luck of this area is affected. The person this sector affects the most is the woman, wife or mother of the house. Because this is the “relationship” sector, if it’s missing, social and love relationships will be hindered.
Not only that, but the luck and effectiveness of the woman of the house is reduced, as is the luck of any females in the household. There may also be reproductive complaints, such as infertility, or stomach ailments. If this sector is missing for a single man looking for a relationship, a suitable mate might be hard to find because the “woman” or the “love” energy in his home is actually missing.
Add lighting, crystals, and red objects to help stimulate the southwest corner to revive love relationships, attract partners to singles and bring happiness to the woman of the house. Yellow, beige, red, pink, orange and purple are all excellent colors for this corner. Other enhancements would include pairs of objects, such as vases, porcelain bowls, or pictures of mountains. A pair of ducks or pictures of geese will help to attract love if you are single and have a missing southwest corner.
The West Sector: Children, Creativity and Fertility
The west sector directly affects the luck of the children of the household. If this sector is missing or afflicted, your children will find it hard to be motivated, reach their goals, or not be as close with the family as you would like. This is particularly true for the youngest daughter of the house, as this sector relates to this child. It’s also the sector of creativity and projects.
Anything you’re trying to get off the ground, such as a new business, etc., will benefit from attention to the west sector. Likewise, if you’re an artist or writer, the west is an important sector for you as it will help to stimulate your creative energies.
Those interested in getting pregnant would also do well to pay particular attention to the west part of the living room and bedroom stimulating this area with rainbow colors, lights, and pictures of children. Add earth elements, metal objects and yellow, beige, silver white or gray colors to this corner of the house.
The Northwest Sector: Breadwinner, Man, Mentor and Helpful People
When you need someone to help you, you need the northwest corner to work for you. This corner gives you the luck of mentors who help you get ahead, introduce you to the right people, or who offer your their influence, guidance and assistance. This is also the sector that represents the man of the family, and most often, the breadwinner.
When this corner has problems, the man of the house has difficulties with his health, his job or income, and life is difficult. You also find that it’s hard to find a helping hand! The energies that deplete the northwest corner the most are kitchens, fireplaces, and bathrooms. Of these, areas where there are fire in this corner can bring sudden loss of the man or for the man, such as cancer, accidents, heart attack, job loss, or bankruptcy.
Strengthen this corner with earth and metal elements. Televisions, metal filing cabinets and earth objects such as pictures of mountains or important men, ancestors, or foreign lands all strengthen this corner of the house – and most importantly – bring luck to the man of the house and boost helpful people in your life.
